If you want an early 1950s coat sewing pattern that looks distinctive without relying on close fitting, #369 has a particularly good shape. This loose-fitting manteau vague has a generous, almost cape-like line, wide sleeves and enough volume to sit comfortably over winter clothes. It has presence without looking overworked, and the clean silhouette is exactly the sort of thing that can make a simple outfit look considered. Sew it well and it will be noticed.
The original Femmes d’Aujourd’hui pattern shows just how versatile this vintage coat design was intended to be. Model 1 was made in a thick, fluffy white fabric for seaside holidays, with double topstitching emphasising the sleeve slits and side vents. Model 2 was suggested as a tartan travel coat, with the option of cutting the collar and facings on the bias for extra interest. Model 3 moved the same pattern into town in black wool for a smarter, more dressed-up version.
The construction is refreshingly straightforward for a coat. The loose body means there is far less fitting to worry about than with a shaped tailored style, so you can concentrate on accurate cutting, neat seams, a good collar and careful topstitching. The centre-back seam keeps the back clean, while the side vents and sleeve openings give the coat its relaxed movement.
This is the sort of vintage sewing pattern that rewards a good fabric choice. A substantial wool, textured coating or bold check could make the shape look expensive with very little fuss, and the simple cut gives the cloth room to do the work.
What makes this 1950s loose coat so appealing now is the same thing that made it useful then: comfort without sacrificing style. It is easy to wear over layers, unusual enough to stand out, and timeless enough to become the coat people recognise you in.
