This early 1950s draped dress sewing pattern has the sort of elegance that comes from the cut rather than decoration. The fitted bodice, deep V neckline and soft shawl-style collar are restrained, then the skirt breaks that neat line with a drape drawn up over the left hip and falling into a short cascading panel. It feels sophisticated, feminine and very grown-up without needing a huge skirt or lots of trim.

The bodice is shaped with darts, while the fitted three-quarter sleeves finish with turned-back cuffs. The skirt stays fairly straight through the body, so the gathered hip drape becomes the main feature. That contrast between the clean fitted shape and the soft fall of fabric is what gives this vintage dress its character.

I would put #400 at intermediate level. A mock-up is worthwhile to get the bust, waist and hip fit right before working on the drape. You should already be comfortable sewing and pressing darts accurately, setting in sleeves, working a collar and facing, transferring markings carefully and following concise written instructions without needing a picture for every step.

Fabric choice matters a great deal with this design. Femmes d’Aujourd’hui suggested fine violet wool jersey, black wool crêpe with a contrasting white crêpe collar, and light pebble crêpe. The cloth needs enough softness and weight to fall into the hip drape cleanly, but still enough body to keep the fitted bodice and skirt looking sharp. Too crisp and the drape will stick out; too limp and the dress can lose its shape.

That is really where the success of this 1950s dress lies. Get the fit right, choose the fabric well and let the drape fall as it should, and the whole thing has a polished, expensive-looking finish without needing obvious embellishment. It is a distinctive vintage sewing pattern, but in a quieter, more assured way.
