#418 is one of those early 1950s sewing patterns that reminds you just how inventive vintage drafting could be. This is not simply another fitted sundress with a gathered skirt.

The bust shaping runs into the shoulder straps, the front midriff panel arches upwards beneath the bust, and the skirt construction is unusual enough to make an experienced sewist stop and study the pattern before starting. If you enjoy making garments that you are unlikely to see repeated everywhere else, this one has real appeal.

The front skirt is gathered into the centre beneath the arched waist panel, with slanted buttoned pocket openings keeping the hips cleaner. At the back, the skirt falls more freely into a deep centre-back box pleat. The sleeveless bolero is softly shaped below the bust and ties at the front, giving you another way to change the look with contrast fabric.

I would class this as an intermediate-to-advanced vintage dress sewing pattern. A mock-up is essential because the bust, straps and shaped midriff all need to work together.

You should already be comfortable making fitting adjustments, sewing gathers and shaped seams, working buttoned pockets and box pleats, and following concise written instructions without needing every step illustrated.

Originally suggested in canvas or cotton, #418 makes a striking spring or summer dress. The reward for the extra fitting work is a genuinely unusual 1950s sundress, with construction details you rarely see in modern patterns.

Modern Size Chart

Vintage patterns are usually sized by bust measurement.  This is the best single measurement for choosing a pattern size.

If you have a larger bust size compared to your dress size, you will need to calculate your dress cup size. It’s very simple. For more info, please click here

We specialise in grading our vintage patterns to other Bust sizes from 32 to 64 inches (82cm to 163cm) on request.
