#447 has the sort of early-1950s glamour that makes you feel properly dressed without sacrificing comfort. The softly fitted bodice, dramatic standing collar and gently flared three-quarter-circle skirt give it a strong, elegant silhouette, but the kimono sleeves and underarm gussets keep the upper body surprisingly easy to wear. It is smart enough for dinners, parties, weddings or any occasion where you want to look polished without feeling restricted.
The bodice has short cut-on sleeves with underarm gussets, princess seams shaping the front and a clean back cut on the fold. A zipper closes the left side. The high stand collar is the main feature, rising around the neck and flaring out to frame the face, while the skirt fits smoothly at the waist before opening into a generous sweep.
This is a fairly easy 1950s dress sewing pattern for someone with solid basic sewing skills. I would still make a mock-up to check the bodice, waist and collar before cutting your final fabric. You should already be comfortable with princess seams, underarm gussets, inserting a side zipper, hemming a curved skirt and following concise written instructions.
Originally published as a festive dress, #447 works far beyond Christmas. Made in jacquard, brocade, wool blend or a good cotton with some body, it becomes a comfortable, distinctive vintage occasion dress with just enough drama to make it memorable.
