#420 is the sort of early 1950s dress sewing pattern that gives you a satisfying result without weeks of work. The construction is straightforward, the silhouette is flattering, and there are plenty of good details to stop it looking basic. It is a useful reminder that an easy vintage sewing project can still produce something you are genuinely pleased to wear and show off.
The softly bloused bodice has very short cut-on kimono sleeves, a one-piece collar and lapels, and a button-through front. The straight skirt opens into pleats either side of the centre panel for comfortable movement, while the shaped pocket flaps echo the collar. Those few details give the dress its character without adding difficult construction.
This is a basic-to-intermediate 1950s dress sewing pattern. You should already be comfortable with a quick mock-up, buttonholes, a simple collar and lapel, pleats and following concise written instructions without needing every step illustrated.
It is also a great pattern for fabric that deserves to be seen. Use a bold print, strong stripes or checks and let the simple cut show them off. The original striped version even uses chevrons at the collar and pockets for extra impact.
The original size 48 is drafted for a 43 in (109 cm) bust. Cotton or linen makes an easy summer dress, while a slightly heavier fabric carries it into spring or early autumn. Quick to sew, easy to wear and adaptable enough to make again in a completely different mood.
