If you want an easy 1950s dress sewing pattern that is quick to make but still has enough character to draw compliments, #361 is one I would happily recommend. Originally published by Femmes d’Aujourd’hui in 1952, it has a fitted bodice, softly shaped neckline and bias-cut skirt with box pleats front and back. The bodice wraps from the back towards the front and fastens at either side of the neckline, giving a simple dress a finish people notice.

The original pattern was intended for lightweight woven fabrics such as crêpe, checked cotton and shantung. I have also made it many times in jersey and easy-sew knits for everyday wear, while a firmer stretch fabric such as scuba can give a closer, more figure-hugging version that is still comfortable.

This is one of the easier original vintage sewing patterns in the collection. You need to follow written instructions, mark accurately and put a garment together in the correct order, but there are no difficult tailoring techniques. The front bodice may need some dart adjustment to get the first fitting right, especially on a fuller bust, so I would make a quick mock-up first. Once that fit is sorted, it becomes an easy pattern to return to again and again.

We also offer this dress as a fully graded modern multi-size pattern with illustrated instructions. [Link to be added.]
I make this dress a few times a year because it is quick, flattering and easy to vary. Change the fabric and it can look completely different, but the shape still has enough vintage character to stand out. It is the sort of dress that earns compliments without looking overdone, which is exactly why it keeps proving useful.

Modern Size Chart

Vintage patterns are usually sized by bust measurement.  This is the best single measurement for choosing a pattern size.

If you have a larger bust size compared to your dress size, you will need to calculate your dress cup size. It’s very simple. For more info, please click here

We specialise in grading our vintage patterns to other Bust sizes from 32 to 64 inches (82cm to 163cm) on request.
